Sandal Primary School primary delivery

Overview

Sandal Primary School is a thriving primary school at the heart of Baildon village. Of all our partner schools, Sandal presents one of the broadest ranges of opportunities for our staff to showcase their versatility and expertise.

Our coaches, Tom and Emma, are challenged to fulfil a wide range of key performance indicators — from developing a lifelong love of physical activity to improving teacher confidence and delivering engaging, progressive PE sessions. Their enthusiasm and professionalism have helped them build a fantastic working relationship with both staff and pupils across the school.

Intent

Our work at Sandal Primary is structured around three key strands of delivery, each designed to inspire active lifestyles, improve confidence, and promote sustainability in physical education.

1. Active Lunchtimes

The first strand focuses on creating enjoyable and inclusive active opportunities during lunchtime. The aim of this programme is to nurture a lifelong love of physical activity by offering children the chance to participate in a variety of games and activities they might not otherwise experience. These sessions encourage teamwork, resilience, and fun — ensuring every child is engaged and active throughout the school day.

2. PE Curriculum Delivery

We are also responsible for delivering a broad and balanced PE curriculum in line with the Department for Education’s programme of study.

Our goal is to plan, deliver, and review progressive, challenging, and enjoyable lessons across all year groups. Over the course of our delivery, pupils have had the opportunity to develop skills in a range of sports, including handball, football, tag rugby, dance, gymnastics, hockey, cricket, and basketball.

Through staff feedback, it became clear that teacher confidence and subject knowledge were key areas for development. To address this, our coaches work closely with class teachers through team planning, co-teaching, and feedback sessions, ensuring our impact is both immediate and sustainable. This collaborative approach has led to visible improvements in teacher confidence and the overall quality of PE delivery at the school.

3. Out-of-School Hours (OOSH) Provision

The final strand of our delivery focuses on out-of-school-hours clubs, designed to broaden children’s experiences and provide opportunities beyond the traditional school day.

We’ve introduced a wide variety of sports and activities — including dodgeball, hockey, tennis, gymnastics, and parkour — giving pupils access to experiences they may not encounter at external clubs.

While OOSH clubs can be challenging due to associated costs for parents, our model allows schools flexibility. We charge an hourly rate, enabling the school to set its own price point — this helps them manage finances effectively and potentially generate additional funds to support opportunities for their most vulnerable pupils.

Impact

The impact of our partnership with Sandal Primary has been clear across all areas of delivery. Pupils are more engaged, teachers are more confident, and the school community is increasingly active and enthusiastic about PE and physical wellbeing. Head of PE, Natalie Rall had this to say about our provision, “the partnership we have with White Rose has been exceptional, the consistency and delivery standards they provide has been unparalleled. Lead coaches Emma and Tom deliver consistently high quality sessions challenging all students in a fun and enjoyable way.”
