Burley and Woodhead Primary School Tag Rugby (Years 3–6)

Burley and Woodhead School wanted to: 

• Deliver high-quality, curriculum-aligned PE for Years 3–6 

• Increase pupil engagement and confidence in physical activity 

• Support staff in delivering more effective and enjoyable PE lessons 

• Build stronger links with local sports clubs and competitive opportunities 

We designed and delivered a fully structured Tag Rugby programme tailored specifically for KS2 pupils. 

This included: 

• A progressive curriculum for Years 3–6, building from fundamental skills to full game play 

• High-energy, inclusive sessions that maximised participation and engagement 

• On-the-job staff development, giving teachers practical ideas and confidence 

• A clear pathway into local rugby clubs and school competitions 

• Maximum Engagement: Every child is active for the majority of the session – no standing around 

• Game-Based Learning: Pupils learn through playing, not just drills 

• Confidence Building: Activities are designed so all pupils can succeed, regardless of ability 

• Real Skill Progression: Clear development from basic skills in Year 3 to tactical gameplay in Year 6 

• Confident, Game-Ready Pupils
  Year 3–6 pupils can independently organise and play Tag Rugby, applying tactics and teamwork. 

• Noticeable Skill Improvement
  Coordination, decision-making, and overall game understanding improved across all year groups. 

• Stronger Secondary Transition
  Secondary PE staff recognised the higher standard of incoming pupils. 

• Up-skilled Teaching Staff
  Teachers gained new ideas, activities, and confidence to deliver engaging PE lessons themselves. 

• Increased Participation in Sport
  Growth in after-school club attendance and enthusiasm for PE. 

• Stronger Community Links
  Increased numbers of pupils joining local rugby clubs and attending festivals. 

• Supports Ofsted focus areas: intent, implementation, and impact in PE 

• Helps deliver a broad, engaging, and inclusive PE curriculum 

• Builds a lasting legacy, not just a short-term programme 

• Creates healthier, more confident, and more active pupils
